Quit Smoking..‏

Health and Care

Drink milk to quit smoking

Milk not only does the body good it may also help you quit smoking, says a study.

Consuming milk makes the taste of cigarette bad and by making a few modifications to the diet one can make quitting bit easier, said the study published in April 2007 issue of the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

The study is said to be the first to explore the taste-altering effects of food and beverages on cigarette palatability.

The study examined 209 smokers and asked them to name items that worsen or enhance the taste of cigarettes.

Nineteen percent of them reported that dairy products, such as milk or cheese, worsen the taste of cigarettes; 14 percent reported non-caffeinated beverages, such as water or juice; and 16 percent reported fruits and vegetables.

The Beautiful Colour of love

What colour is God,
Asked the child with skin so fair
Is he white like me,
Does he have light hair
Is God dark like me,
Asked the child with skin of golden hue
Has he hair that's dark and curly,
Are his eyes black or blue
I think God is red like me,
The Indian boy is heard to say
He wears a crown of feathers,
And turns our nights to day
Each one of us knows that God is there
In all the colours above
But be sure of this, the one colour he is,
Is the beautiful colour of love
So when your soul goes to Heaven,
When your life comes to its end
He will be waiting, and his hand to you
Will he extend.
There will be no colours in Heaven,
Everyone will be the same.
You will only be judged by your earthly deeds,
Not your colour or your name
So when your time comes,
And you see God in his Heaven above,
Then you will see the only colour that counts,
The beautiful colour of love.

Pope attacker has Facebook fans

A Facebook fan page created for the woman accused of attacking Pope Benedict XVI has caused outrage in Italy. The page has been set up in honour of Susanna Maiolo, a 25-year-old Italian-Swiss woman, accused of leaping over security barriers at a Christmas Eve service at the Vatican and knocking over the pope. The Vatican has said the woman has mental health problems. Most of the comments on the page are sarcastic. One says she should get “the Olympic hurdles gold medal”. Gianfranco Rotondi, government action minister in the conservative government of Silvio Berlusconi, called the page “stupid” and “cowardly” and said it should be condemned and taken down. Antonio Gentile, a senator for Berlusconi’s ruling party, said the page “confirms the need for legislative action”. He added, “a social network cannot be place that celebrates violence”.

New Yorkers beware! New cockroach hits the Big Apple

New Yorkers are used to fighting each other for space, but there may be a new contender in town according to a Rockefeller study that appears to have uncovered a new species of cockroach.

“The cockroach is genetically modified. Species don’t differ more than one percent, this cockroach is four percent different, which suggests it is a new species of cockroach,” Professor Mark Stoeckle, an expert on genomics and DNA barcoding at Rockefeller University, told AFP.

“We think that the museums of natural history in Paris or New York could be interested.” The previously-unidentified creepy-crawly was uncovered as part of a project undertaken by two high-school students, Brenda Tan, 17, and Matt Cost, 18, under Stoeckle’s supervision. In their roles as ‘DNAHouse investigators’, the pair trawled New York apartments, stores and street, collecting 217 specimens between November 2008 and March 2009.

They took samples from supermarket food, the remains of an insect found in a box of fruit, a feather from a duster, dried dung and a cockroach and matched DNA sequences using the Barcode of Life Database and GenBank. The American Museum of Natural History laboratory identified 170 genetic codes, leading the researchers to identify 95 different animal species, including some that were unexpected. But perhaps the biggest surprise for the researchers was the discovery of “a genetically distinct ‘mystery’ cockroach that might be a new species. By appearance it looks like the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) but it is genetically different from other American cockroaches in the databases,” the researchers said.
