Facebook glitch exposes chat messages

Facebook on Wednesday temporarily shut down its online chat feature after a software glitch let people’s friends in the online community see each others’ private chat messages. “Chat is unavailable as we work quickly to fix a bug reported to us,” Facebook said in a message posted at the website. “It should return to normal soon. Because of the bug, people could view friends’ chat messages and friend requests for a limited amount of time.” For peeks at the usually walled off information Facebook users had to manipulate a “preview my profile” feature in a particular way, according to Facebook. “We’ve fixed that issue and took down chat as soon as we became aware of it,” Facebook said in its message. “We apologise for the inconvenience.”

‘Vampire’ attackers drink New Zealand man’s blood

The authorities in New Zealand have charged three people for allegedly biting a man and drinking his blood in a “vampire” attack, a report said Thursday. James Brooks, 22, and Xenia Borichevsky, 19, appeared in court Wednesday and a warrant was issued for the arrest of the third accused, James Orr, 19, following the incident in Wellington in February, the Dominion Post newspaper reported. Brooks told the newspaper that all three bit the victim, but he did not personally drink any blood, although he added he understood some blood had been drunk. “That wasn’t me. Do I look like a vampire? I’m out during the day time,” the newspaper quoted him as saying outside the court. Brooks said he, his girlfriend, a friend and the unnamed victim had left a party when the attack happened. Brooks said he had bitten the victim, who had tried to pick up his girlfriend. “Yeah, I bit a guy... he hit on my missus. My girlfriend and my mate were biting him. I was angry with him, so I used it as an excuse,” he told the Dominion Post. The victim apparently passed out after the attack

Feel the power NY gyms pedal for electricity

New York gym rats can now not only build muscle power, but also electric power as they pedal on fitness bikes designed to light up their own health clubs.

“Electrify your workout! Later this month you will be able to shrink your waistline and your carbon footprint all at the same time,” a motivational poster says at New York Sports Club, urging clients to use “pedaling power to help create a healthier planet.” Some 20 clients pedaled furiously under the poster on stationary bicycles turning sweat equity into sweat electricity. “It’s a great idea, really fun. It allows students to monitor themselves, the monitor tells you how many watts you’re creating. It’s a win-win situation,” said gym instructor Rick Meadows.

The mechanism is simple, using dynamos on the bicycles to transfer 12 volts of electricity produced by the cyclists’ pedaling to a generator that creates alternating current of 110 volts. From there, the current helps power the gym building and reduces its bills - although not the subscriptions for members. “I invented the system in early 2007 in Connecticut, where I live,” said Jay Whelan, 46, CEO of The Green Revolution. The commercial debut was made in 2009 in California. “We began in Washington two weeks ago and here in New York,” Whelan said, adding that there are 40 customers - so far only using spin bikes. It takes 20 people to create about three kilowatts in a one-hour session.

‘Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ set for 2011 release

The ‘Twilight’ vampire fangs - and fans - will be out again in 2011. The Hollywood studio behind ‘Twilight’ on Wednesday set a November 18, 2011, release date for a film version of the last of the four novels in the teen vampire series. But no one knows yet if ‘Breaking Dawn’ will be made into one film or two. The ‘Twilight’ movies from independent studio Summit Entertainment are based on the hugely popular books of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer. The next film, ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’, is due out June 30, and with former horror film director David Slade getting behind the camera, Hollywood watchers expect it to take on darker tones than the first two films. Summit has said that ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ will be directed by Bill Condon, who made the 2006 musical movie ‘Dreamgirls’ and co-produced this year’s Academy Awards

Copenhagen buses play Cupid with ‘love seats’

A Copenhagen bus company has put ‘love seats’ on 103 of its vehicles for people looking to make a new friend... or even something more. “Even love at first sight is possible on the bus,” said a spokesman for the British owned Arriva company to explain the two seats on each bus that are covered in red cloth and a ‘love seat’ sign. “You never know what will happen,” spokesman Martin Wex told AFP. “We cannot guarantee that you will find the person of your dreams. We are just offering the possibility for people to communicate, to smile a bit more and possibly, to win someone’s heart.” The experiment, which according to driver testimony has lightened the mood on buses, is to last two weeks, Wex said. “Some drivers have noticed smiling girls sitting in these seats,” hoping for interesting company, he said. In addition to helping customer relations, the ‘love seat’ experiment aims to convince car drivers to leave their vehicles at home and opt for a more social mode of transport. Arriva, according to Wex, is simply offering passengers “a chance to find happiness.”

Tehran beggars make 1,500 dollars a month

Beggars in the Iranian capital earn the equivalent of $1,500 a month - five times the official minimum wage - the Mehr news agency reported. “Tehran beggars make at least 500,000 rials ($50) a day or 15 million rials a month,” the agency quoted Sadegh Avvali, the official in charge of social services at Tehran municipality, as saying. He said that most beggars roaming the streets asking for change in the sprawling capital come from villages and remote towns or are foreigners, and that authorities round up about 300 vagrants and beggars daily. Under a municipality initiative, panhandlers and vagrants would be picked off the streets and sent to shelters at night, Mehr quoted him as saying. Beggars, including women and children, routinely roam the Iranian capital and other large cities, especially the religious hubs such as the northeastern city of Mashhad. Homeless children and adults also often sell flowers and chewing gum at busy intersections. The Iranian minimum wage equals about $300 a month, and many Iranians believe that giving alms is a charitable act that also prevents mishaps.

Gold, diamond-encrusted guns seized in Mexico

Mexican security forces have seized 31 gold and silver-plated, diamond encrusted guns believed to belong to allies of the powerful Sinaloa drug gang, prosecutors said.

The weapons, including machine guns and assault rifles with sparkling grips, were also engraved with the words ‘Lobo Valencia’, a nickname for Oscar Orlando Nava Valencia, the alleged leader of the Valencia gang, the Attorney General’s office said in a statement. Security forces also found four shot guns, more than 700 cartridges and a small amount of marijuana, jewelry and documents containing Valencia’s name in a storage room in an apartment building in Zapopan, in western Jalisco state. Nava Valencia has worked with Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the fugitive leader of the Sinaloa gang who is Mexico’s most wanted man, the statement said.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last year estimated that Mexico’s drug gangs make around $25 billion each year from smuggling drugs into the United States, but many experts believe the profits are much higher

‘I Gotta Feeling’ most downloaded song in history

The Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling’ has become the most downloaded song in history. With over 5.5 million legal downloads, the track has knocked Flo Rida’s ‘Low’ off the top spot as the largest selling digital song since records were started by company Nielsen Soundscan in 2003. ‘I Gotta Feeling’ spent 14 weeks at number one in the US singles chart last year, and the track is still at number 37 in the chart compiled by iTunes – the largest legal download retailer. While ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is officially the most downloaded song, the band’s previous single ‘Boom Boom Pow’ – a US number one for 12 weeks – is at number four in the list with almost 5.3 million sales. Holding third place is Lady GaGa’s debut track ‘Just Dance’, with around 5.36 million downloads and her second single ‘Poker Face’ is at number five with over 5.13 million downloads.
